Stroud Lib Dems

Fair Votes | Fair Tax | Fair Deal

NEW … Philip Purves - Candidate in Stroud Central's SDC By-Election
Several factors have prompted me to throw my hat in the ring of local politics. Here's just three (besides ensuring there's at least one good alternative to voting Reform!):
1/ I have broad confidence in the LibDems' policies and vision. 2/ Environment and the green-transition is a major concern - and I know that these can translate into various local initiatives (the LD's have been out-performing the Greens in this). 3/ On the social front I'm increasingly concerned about how easily teens and young adults can drift into 'using' (drugs), and how certain circumstances, left unchecked, can leave many without a social safety-net or a chance to 'course-correct'.

As a New Zealander with UK residency my last 18 years have been spent - with family - living in Stroud, Glos. I'm now retired but meanwhile offering some digital media services and community-volunteering work. Increasingly interested in politics (big-picture and local) I have latterly agreed to this candidacy for the by-election (attached to the county-wide May 1st elections). The decision to do this was too late to do any campaigning but I'm pleased that there will be a LibDem option on the list.

Your vote (i.e. if voting in StroudCentral ward) can help make a difference.

N.B. The May 1st LD candidate for Glos County Council is George James

GEORGE JAMES: LibDem's Parliamentary Candidate STROUD is campaigning for your vote with three outstanding concerns in mind:
FAIR EDUCATION, COST OF LIVING (help) and VOTING REFORM

George will especially fight for improving education across the Stroud constituency. With his experience as a teacher, former school governor and councillor for Wotton-under-Edge he brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, particularly in understanding the intricate needs of both students and educational institutions. He advocates for better funding for further education (FE) and recognises the miraculous job colleges do despite financial constraints. “My dedication to the community extends beyond the classroom. As a former councillor of 8 years, I have a strong record of action, working on behalf of residents on issues such as improving local infrastructure, supporting new play equipment, supporting our county councillors with saving bus routes and standing up for those who need it. I demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity, quality, and innovation, promising a brighter educational future for the constituency.”

By focusing on high-quality teaching and targeted academic support, George aims to address the disparities in education quality and access. His vision for Stroud includes a tiered model that focuses on these aspects, alongside wider strategies like improving attendance and school planning support, to ensure that all students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, can flourish. “Education is the cornerstone of a brighter future, both for individuals and our planet. Through learning, people gain the skills and knowledge to secure better jobs, improve their health, and participate actively in society. Education and providing a fair deal for all fosters innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, all crucial for tackling global challenges like climate change and resource management. By empowering people with understanding, education paves the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.”

George (pictured) now lives in Uplands, Stroud.
